The Fundamentals of Music are an ancient text by Greek composer Boethius. It was written in 500 AD. Boethius did not actually read the Greek writings until the 15th centuries, but the text shows the mathematics behind the tuning systems, the moral nature of certain modes, as well as the history and origins of plainchant.

Elements of music

Music is made up of various elements. These elements are what give songs their soul, emotion and character. Perhaps the most important element in music is human connection. A piece can transport an audience to another world. It is your responsibility as an artist to understand how these elements interact and to use that knowledge to improve your music.

Harmony

Harmony is a concept that relates musical tones. The human ear recognizes this relationship. This idea can be expressed scientifically. Pythagoras was one of the first to demonstrate this relationship. He used this famous experiment to strung a string and then pluck it. He calculated the distance between each note by divising it using an easy arithmetical equation.

Pitch

The fundamental frequency or lowest frequency that a musical note can be heard is called the "basic frequency". This frequency is recognized by the ear as a particular pitch. This frequency is displayed as the displaystyle s-1 (also called Hertz).

Rhythm

The organization of various music elements is called rhythm. It occurs in accompaniment and melody and is expressed in a combination of short and long durations, known as measures. For example, a song using a simple meter sounds straight. However, one that uses a compound meters sounds "swung", "changed" or "changed".

Texture

Musicians can use a variety if techniques to create different textures. One such technique is resonation. This technique produces sound by altering the levels of density in various voice types. Many factors influence the texture of the sound, including the size and the timbre and dynamics of the melody and its articulation. Another important aspect is rhythmic complexity. This refers to the variety of rhythms used in the accompaniment. Music does not have to be one type of texture.

Articulation

Articulation plays a vital role in music performance. There are many different types of articulation. Each has its own characteristics. These characteristics include loudness, timbre, intonation, and envelope characteristics. The most important characteristic of articulation, is its length. This determines the duration of a note. A string player may accent one note by playing it harder and faster than usual. This can create a louder sound.
