How To

What is vocational training?

Vocational Education, which is an educational system that prepares high school students for jobs after college or high school, provides them with training in specific skills required for a job (e.g. welding). Vocational Education also offers apprenticeship programs that provide on-the-job training. Vocational education differs from general education because it focuses on preparing individuals for specific careers rather than learning broad knowledge for future use. Vocational training is not designed to prepare individuals for university but rather to assist them in finding jobs upon graduation.

Vocational education can be offered at any level of schooling: primary, secondary, college, university, technical institutes and trade schools. There are many schools that specialize in specific subjects, such as nursing schools (law schools), medical schools, dental school, veterinary medicine and firefighting schools. These schools offer both practical and academic training.

Over the past decade, a number of countries have made substantial investments in vocational education. These include Australia, Denmark and Finland, Germany. However, the effectiveness of vocational education remains controversial. Some argue it doesn't improve students' employability, while others argue it prepares them for the future.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that 47% of American adults hold a postsecondary certificate or degree related to their current occupation. This number is higher for those with higher education. 71% of 25-29-year-olds have a bachelor's or higher degree and are employed in areas that require postsecondary credentials.

The BLS reported that almost half the adult population of the country had at least one form of postsecondary credential as of 2012. One-third of Americans had a two year associate degree. Only 10% held a four-year bachelors degree. One in five Americans holds a master’s degree or doctorate.

The median annual salary for people with a bachelor's was $50,000. This compares to $23,800 for those who don't have a degree. For advanced degrees, the median annual wage was $81,300.

The median income for those who have not completed high school was just $15,200. Earn $13,000 per annum for those with less high school diplomas.
